Westmont celebrated a landmark moment for its athletic program with the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new Boersma Tennis Complex. The facility stands as a testament to years of vision, generosity and commitment to student-athlete excellence.

“For our tennis teams, this facility represents a significant step forward,” said Robert Ruiz, director of athletics. “It gives our student-athletes and coaches a place to prepare, connect and build the daily habits to sustain a strong program. It also sends a meaningful message: We believe in you. We value your experience, and we're committed to helping you grow.”

Head Men’s Tennis Coach Chris Elwood reflected on the program's journey from its modest past, including memories around an old court shed, to the world-class complex now standing on campus.

“On behalf of the tennis team, we are most grateful for your support and are thrilled that this moment has arrived,” Elwood said. “Creating memories, community building and commitment to home—these three intertwining visions come to mind. This facility is one we will take pride in, take care of, share with others and defend with our rackets to the best of our ability. It is our new home.”

Lead donor and Westmont alumnus Ed Boersma ‘85 spoke warmly about his personal connection to the college, where he met lifelong friends and his wife, Betsy ‘87.

“This project, which has spent many years in the development process from concept to completion, is well worth the wait,” Boersma shared. “Westmont played a pivotal role in my Christian journey, and so it's been a joy and a privilege to be a part of the support and effort for this top-quality facility that will be enjoyed by student-athletes and the Westmont community for many decades to come.”

Dave Odell, executive director of athletics, closed the dedication with a blessing over the courts, praying that the complex serves as ground where character, perseverance, and lifelong community are built for years to come.

Senior women's tennis team captain Avala Elwood expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all the student-athletes.

“We love our new facility,” Elwood said. “These courts have been the setting for numerous wonderful moments throughout my life, and the place where friendships were formed with teammates through a shared pursuit of faithful excellence. I'm so excited for our current teams and future Warriors to get to enjoy this facility.”

Westmont President Gayle D. Beebe emphasized the broader impact of the complex on the college’s mission and student character.

“This is a distinguishing landmark on campus and has elevated the tennis program,” Beebe said. “I am grateful for the Boersma’s generosity, thankful to God that competitive athletes exist and that through competitive integrity we learn how to be great people, great citizens and great children of God.”
